About 98% of animal species that have ever existed on Earth have become extinct.
About 95% of them became extinct before the loosest definition of man could be applied to any species.

I agree it is sad, but they couldn't cope with environmental forcings very well; Changing these forcings to benefit the Rhinos would have adversely affected other species.
