I wanna be a buff. Is this where I become a buff?

(Seinfeld reference)

Dave here!

My background is actually in math, (a qualifier away from a master's) and I was interested in math history during undergrad, then realized I didn't know HISTORY history. So the last few years I've been patching that up in my "spare time."

A lot of this involves listening to podcasts, of which I now have a huge collection. (It is online - I will share it perhaps but I don't want my first post to appear spammy.)

I have a 5 year plan actually for my history learning. This year I am out of the Roman Empire, and now getting into early Anglo Saxon history and also the Byzantine empire.

I enjoy reading historical fiction as a way to put drama into the history I am learning about, but I am really picky about it. My favorite so far has been Robert Harris's trilogy. These were the first I've read, and nothing has lived up to it since.

Oh and with respect to the admins (this looks like a well run forum) is there a way to change the interface color here?

It's not that I don't like it, it's more that it's kind of attention grabbing and I am doing this from work.

If you want to be a Buff you have to join the Royal East Kent Regiment (the Buffs). Steady the Buffs!

Ha. Consider me initiated. Or at least I've survived the first part of whatever ritual you all have here...

Yes, I have that one! This one is well produced (BBC after all) and delivered by a real mathematician, but's only a handful of episodes. My goal at some point is to make my own math history podcast.

It's a long term project though and I won't be starting for some time.

Welcome DaveK. You mention studying history as a long-term personal program. I think that describes many of our most serous scholars. You don't really think you've done with Rome and Byzantium, do you? Knowing more today than yesterday just opens more doors of inquiry, more interesting stories and enlightening tid-bits. Long-term probably means this is something you'll be doing one way or another when you are as old as I am. It is personally gratifying to know the factual stories behind famous men and times.

Expect to share some of that knowledge with other members. Some will know far more than you may ever discover, and others will know much less. Be patient and nice with both, and make your enquiries or statements something to look forward to.
