Welcome, Dave. I'm originally from Falls Church. I went to George C. Marshall H.S. That's just down from where 495 crosses Route 7.
In Erhard Raus' book Panzer Operations, he writes about how the German forces cut off in Lithuania after Dec '44 welded the lids of railroad tanker cars shut and transported them in line through the Baltic to Germany by tow cables connected to a destroyer, on account of the shortage of rolling stock there. Apparently, one broke loose and was mistaken for a submarine.
