Just joined - hello

Hello Historum people,

I've always had an interest in the history of the landscapes where i've lived/walked. I think it's the thought of living in a landscape less crowded and not privately owned that appeals.

We moved to Wharfedale (Yorkshire, England) in 2006 and the moors bordering the valley are littered with ancient carved rocks, earthworks, ancient tracks, stone circles, etc. Not much is known about them - so this has tempted me into writing about them.
I see there are lots of lively discussions on here - I look forward to swapping ideas and info, especially on the iron age here and further afield.

As the name suggests, I'm a bit of a vegetable gardening nerd too (including the history and origin of edible plants).

I've a real interest in growing as much as possible (rather than buying it) and eating only local grown produce. I've grown my own hops (Fuggles) for hte last 2 years - it seems if the plant likes your soil (I bought one in) its hard to stop it growing (20ft plus per year) . I plant could be used to make you an awful lot of beer.
Not got the room to grown my own barley - but have made beer from just malted barley grains and my own hops - so half way there.
As far as I know, the addition of hops did not happen in England until the 1400s - before that the brewed drink was known as ale - 'hopped' ale was the named as beer (apologies if you already new that).

Wow, a gardener extraordinaire in our ranks

Perhaps he will put DeliciousRedTomatoes or whatever his name is to shame.
