Hello from Cincinnati Ohio USA

Hello History Lovers!

It is a thrill to learn anything at all that helps me understand this world, it's history, the people and what ties us all together. My education and understanding has great big holes so I thought a forum like this might help me to be a more efficient learner of world history because I am so isolated in my study and mostly limited to internet resources. Sadly, it seems the more I learn the more ignorant I feel. What can a girl do?

I am 45. I have a high school diploma. I work as a house cleaner which is a little bit physically taxing, but the advantage of this work is that I can listen to lectures and pod casts that help me learn about the world at the same time I make a living. In the evenings I look up youtube videos, documentaries, and webpages to supplement what I have been listening about during the day, and to help me get used to the new names, places, and events. My free time is so limited that the rate of learning/understanding is painfully slow.

Other than my youngest son who is a curious, very bright 21 year old, there is no one I know who is very interested in the subjects of world history and civilizations as vast as it is. I also have a brother who is fascinated by the classical Greeks and we read together once a week about anything related to them.

My current focus of study is from late antiquity, from the death of Alexander through to the taking of Constantinople. This is a huge fascinating chunk of world history. I am looking at Persia and the Middle East, Rome, North Africa and will be looking at China and India soon for a broad overview of the time. I and mostly ignorant about China and India and so I am looking forward to investigating about those places.

The most difficult part in learning is recognizing biases in the sources I learn from and so I try to have as many different views as I can find. I do my best to be objective and clear headed which is easier the more foreign a time and place is, yet also there must be some emotional identification to the material or It wouldn't be fascinating.

Thanks to anyone who actually read all that. I look forward to checking out the forums and may post some questions if it seems fitting.
