Hi! Looking for suggestions.

Hi,
Just joined in the last few minutes. I`m a History teacher in Ireland (12-18 year olds). I`m trying to put a small library together and am looking for suggestions for general histories for the following. (For students of varying academic abilities) I`d be very grateful for anybody who would suggest books for the following either here or through emailing me at cormacocomhrai (AT)hotmail.com.
The topics I`m looking for suggestions for are
World War One, World War Two, United States, Womens`History, The History of Civil Rights`Movements, the history of ordinary people (low-ranking soldiers/ civilians in time of war, workers`movements etc.)

Regards
Cormac Ó Comhraí

Re: Hi! Looking for suggestions.

Welcome sir! Here are some I've liked.

While I'm no expert on WWI, Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August is the single best volume that I've read, though it only covers the first part of the war.

Taylor Branch has published two of his three volumes on the Civil Rights movement. Parting the Waters: America in the King Years 1954-63 and Pillar of Fire: America in the King Years 1963-65. These are exceptional!

Hope this is a start for you.

As to WWII, a number come to mind. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich by William Shirer covers Nazi Germany and the European war very well. Rising Sun(2 volumes) by John Toland is an excellent source for the Pacific war.

If you want a book on the US Civil Rights Movement from the 50s and 60s, the companion book for the video series "Eyes on the Prize" is pretty good. The author is Juan Williams.

I haven't found a good survey U.S. history book for children. There are many good books on specific topics though.
