"Ignorance is bliss" versus "The truth shall set you free."
This has had me confounded for a while. I keep ping-ponging between the two.
Which one of these sentences holds true or truer for you and why? (Strictly not religious but as a matter of personal philosophy/approach in your day to day life.)
There are days when I think "I need to find out more about X" and something inexplicable drives me towards gaining more information about it and when I do gain it I usually feel I was probably better off not knowing it. Now I'm stuck with having to deal with the consequences of knowing it. While I love that I'm a huge sucker for knowledge, I also sometimes feel that I know too much for my own good. It just leaves me in a weird place, if you know what I mean. Sort of neither here nor there. Now I've come to believe there are some things that must be known, and others that should be left alone. Problem is figuring out beforehand what falls in which category.
I guess if you believe that the truth shall set you free then you would need a very strong bullshit filter to get to the so-called truth. What is this truth anyway? I guess it's the essence of something.
Any thoughts on this?

Happiness is not guaranteed for anyone. The most abysmally stupid and ignorant and the most brilliant and broadly informed -- all will find themselves butting against brick walls and suffering from all kinds of outrageous slings and arrows. Satisfying natural curiosity (some have precious little of that) by seeking to learn is its own reward.

"The truth shall set you free."
I like it but.. I like Gaius' above as well. So i merely slightly modify it.....Yep: contextual interpretation.

Apply both of these to individual situations. You can't apply only one without suffering connsequences, some more deadly than others. | | |

I firmly believe in knowing the truth and telling the truth, irregardless of the pain it puts yourself or others through.

I share Saladins sentiments. I would take the red pill.
