About the Use of Words.

Is a word defined by its meaning, or by its usage?

The ambiguities of language make it vary.

I'd say its meaning.
Example.
If a person from another nation called me a bad name, even in their
strongest, loudest voice, if I didn't know what the word was
supposed to mean, then I'd be unmoved. He could repeat it, and still
nothing would register with me. No effect.
A person has to know the meaning of the word to make it hit home.

In Cherokee a words meaning is defined by its usage. The sounds phonemes in words are related to word parts that make meaning morphemes. The sounds describe an action or physical attribute of an object. The meaning is a concrete symbolic interpretation of understanding. The world is classified and interpreted then expressed in sounds that communicate that perspective.

eg. I just sat down ᏥᎦᎵᏍᏕᏡᎦ (tsigalisdetluga) tsi-g-ali-s-de-tlu-g-a: tsi- at that moment then, -g- first person pronoun (I), -ali- reflexive, to myself, -s- action has already started, -de- root meaning of bend, -tlu- to place atop of a raised surface, -g- action was progressive, -a action was/is present tense, or immediately passed tense.

Why must it be one or the other? Correct usage is dependent on definitions, granted. However in many cases "improper" usage, if it becomes widespread and accepted, can in the end modify the previously recognized definition. So it goes.

Usually its usage is based upon its meaning and it's meaning at least should be based upon its context. That's why I never got the notion of 'bad words.'

Depends on the mental PICTURE it evokes. Or provokes, or invokes.
