You're doing it again... doing your 'in jokes' and running off anyone with something different to say.....
I won't mention it again... (deadly silence and serious face)
Avon - the granny joke did not go unnoticed.... YOu can be assured... we are not amused...
(that will be my next thread - famous and fun quotations from the old days that have lasted into the modern era...)

I hope and pray that we aren't running anyone off. (I really doubt we are) We need everybody's input to keep us going.

Might there be a sort of historical timeline for humor?
You know, like it starts out in prehistory with a guy sitting under a tree and a cocoanut falls on his head, and ends up with Mr. Hanky?
What are the milestones along the way? The priest from Dundee? The two rabbis that go into a bar?

I nominate for the time line the joke that went "Why worry about the speck of sawdust in my eye when you have a 2 by 4 in your own".

The ancient greeks had a cup that they called a greedy cup. Whenever someone asked for their cup to be filled completely the air pressure would dipense the liquid out the bottom. I couldn't find a good picture so here's a good demonstration. | | |

Bergson wrote a book on humor. I smiled now and then but not with him. But that is true of all books that try to dissect humor, interesting but the patience dies in the process.
Haven't read Frankfurts book. Did read one about the Burger Court tho. | Thanks! I'll look for Schopenhauer's & Bergson's works. I'm at the library now (home internet is down) so should be here somewhere. I've read some of Dewey & didn't learn much or enjoy his writings at all.
You might also try Frankfurt's follow up called On Truth.

A lot of philosophers have great senses of humor. The often-quoted Bertrand Russell has many jokes and ironies in his works.
