Gay Conversion Therapy for Teens

So California is contemplating a ban on Conversion Therapy for gay teens because of concerns over suicide. As a 'psychotherapy' , what is the honest to god rate of success for conversion?

Mankind is attempting to impose his will on nature, it's a bit like telling birds not to fly. Gay people have been around a lot longer than the recent social stigma and they'll be around long after our current prejudices too.

Yah, I sometimes wonder where we come up with some of our tomfoolery.

I've seen no credible evidence that such a thing is possible. Nor do I believe homosexuality is a disorder which needs to be cured.

They remove homosexuality from the DSM and yet they still think this needs to be treated as something you use therapy to "overcome", like it's a disease...

I'm not really sure if this idea originated in the medical community or was more of a political thing though. Hoping the latter, because I can at least understand why it may happen...will still disagree, but will understand (sort of) why some politicians would continue to attempt to "cure" homosexuality.

When will we learn that we cant change gender/sexuality through socialization or similar methods? Its annoying to watch people make the same mistakes over and over again.

There is a book called "As Nature Made Him' by John Colapinto. Essentially, practices based on theories say that our gender ( in this case sexuality ) can be controlled by socialization never work out right.

Check it out if you aren't familiar

The bill banning this "therapy" should pass.

I don't think you can just convert someone to being straight. I have no problem with the gays.

I'm pretty sure that this mentality originated in the bronze age, not the medical community.

People just need to accept reality for what it is, rather than trying to twist it to suit their prejudices.

My uncle was married for several years before coming out. He tried to pretend he was straight, he maybe even wanted to believe that he could turn straight if he tried.

Did not work that way. He was miserable and the marriage did not last. He has now been with his current partner for much longer, and is very happy.
