Default Civilization V

Sid Meier's Civilization V will be released this september, anyone excited? or have anyone played the previous game?

I like it though played IV, but also becoming very busy at school, I can't play it anyway, so I'm gonna pass or not really. It depends.

I'll buy it, but excited would not be the appropiate term.

My favorite game of all time is CIV 1, a ground breaking game. I played CIV 1 endlessly, I love random maps and exploring the world. I consider CIV 2, 3 and 4 as mere upgrades to CIV1 with nothing more than improved graphics, more units, buildings and civilizations, some tweaks to the combat and minor enhancements in game parameters.

Being able to mod the latter games is nice, but again it seems to be the same game with a slightly different and newer wrapper.

My preferred genre is turn based strategy, so I'll buy CIV 5 after I see some reviews as a precaution against excessive bugginess.

Lucky for you. My first play was Civ2 and I love it, till my cousin lost the CD. And somehow I want to mod it.

Steam has killed any interest in it to be honest.

I loved the original CV, to the extent that i had actually memoriesed every access code they used to make you enter before you could play. How sad was that, havn't played any of the new ones so will look forward to CV5 coming out hopefully it will be good

My money is all tied up in Halo: Reach at the moment, maybe next year...after Fallout New Vegas and Dead Rising 2...and FIFA '11. Sigh, no rest for the wicked

I'll be buying it for sure.

I still play Civ IV religiously. I was playing this morning actually!

I've never played Civ. but it looks great. Any game where I can play as the Aztecs gets a thumbs up from me. Are the civilizations unique or do they basically play the same as far as units/goals?

Well in Civilization 4, all the Civilizations have a unique unit and building. Also each leader has 2 certain attributes that effect their civilizations in different ways. Also for alot of the Civilizations you can choose between more than 1 leader.

I'll take the Romans here for an example:

The Romans unique unit if the Praetorian, which replaces the regular "Swordsman" unit. The Praetorian is also freakishly powerful compared to the unit it replaces. It's probably the most powerful unique unit in the game relative to it's era. The Roman special building is the Forum, which replaces the building Marketplace. It's added benefit over a regular marketplace is it increases the "Great Person" points you earn in your city by 25% if you build a Forum.

Then you can choose if you want to play as Julius Caesar or Augustus Caesar. 2 of them share one of the same traits: Imperialistic. This means you can build Settlers and Workers twice as fast, and you have a 100% better chance of your Civilization producing Great Generals in times of war. Where they differ is Caesar is "Organized" while Augustus is "Industrious". This means that if you play as Caesar your Civic Upkeep costs at -50% what they would normally be, and a couple other little perks I can't think of off the top of my head. As Augustus, Industrious means you build Forges and Factories faster, and you can build "Wonders Of The World" 50% faster.

Funny you should mention playing as the Aztecs though, as they are maybe the only Civilization where their unique unit(Jaguar), is actually worse than the unit it replaces(Swordsman). Causes me no end of headaches when I try and play as them.
