What would happen if the Helvettii, Ariovistus' Germans, the Belgae Confederation, the Gallic Confederacy under Vercingetorix, or the British tribes had defeated Caesar or killed him in battle? What ramifications would that event have?

But one is sure in each case civil wars between Roman generals would be continued and with no Augustus and his political genius to forge the imperial goverment.

I think other Roman commanders could have taken Gaul, but probably not with as few of losses as Caesar achieved it with, probably not as quickly either, and they probably wouldn't have been able to take on Pompey in a Civil War. Those things all took a genius like JC.

Augustus will not exist, a total new reality !!!
Caesar forged history in his needs.
And by the way a really intresting book that you should read is Ivar Lisners : "We are the eveningland" (actually i read it in German and the title in German is "Wier sind das Abendland" so my translation maybe lacks a little.

I doubt Pompey would try make himself dictator of rome after all if he wanted to be dictator he wouldn't have retired from being a general and and instead continued his service and secretly raise his own loyal army.Back with the discussion I would add that Rome would have stayed a republic for a larger amount of time and would have had an even longer more bloody constant clashing feud with Gaul.
