What is the biggest threat humans face in the future?

History shows us that nothing lasts forever. Many empires of history have come and gone. They fell for all sorts of reasons, from famine to natural disasters and enemy invasions.

With that in mind, what do you think is the biggest threat humans face in the future? Is it nuclear weapons? Climate change? Acts of terrorism? New diseases and super bugs? Or the rise of AI? Or something else entirely? And will we be able to master these threats successfully?

Think the most likely answers are 1 and 2. 1 is a conditionally greater threat but 2 is inherently going to happen in some capacity. 3 is a big threat but this threat is far less unique nor does it threaten to endanger life on earth. The concept of disease gaining immunity to antibiotics is frightening though. 4 is a really fringe possibility and if it is a threat it's certainly a long way off. Don't think 5 is relatively serious at all seeing how few people die via terrorist attacks relative to all the other options/hypothetical scenarios(thinking exception is AI).

Specific country is legit but I think this ties into the other options. For example the inaction of certain countries on climate is a threat and other particular nations are the main reason we fear nuclear war. I do not see China in particular as a huge threat rather seeing them as the most pro stability/status quo of the great powers. Russia might not be pro stability as Putin seeks to restore Russia's former glory but I also don't see them as a threat given their waning population and traditional sphere of influence. Not going to comment on the US.

Hard choice.

For me there are a few. I go for:

Number 1, its either another big war, I don't know if WWIII or a nuclear one, but some significant war. And I also would like to mix this answer with number 6. And maybe even 5.

And also number 4. Not in the near future, but not as far as we think. But people who manage those technologies are very aware of the risks, so I wouldn't worry to much of it right now. (But I do in the future)

But I don't know, if you think about it, so much things can happen in a lot of different ways by a lot of different causes. We're pretty advanced, and if there's another big war, it's going to be really bad. Almost all options can come together and create a destructive mix. We can use now proper nuclear weapons, create new diseases as bio-weapons, use AI for war, some acts of terrorism, problems between specific nations, and lots of other things

Ultimately, as in down the road 100 years from now, I believe it is AI. As we move toward a more secular, humanist world and people continue to reproduce at a slower rate, some of the religious, philosophical and ideological issues will lessen. Trust and faith in AI, that is without thought and restraint and limits, will result in a crisis for humanity.
