What's "if and when artificial life forms become sentient" have to do with history, speculative or not?

My personal opinion is that an entity(artificial or alien, not necessarily humanoid) is capable of sentience(ie individual independent thought) then it is entitled to treated as though it were a human being. I can programme my DVD Recorder but that doesn't mean it can or will laugh at my jokes!
We are making ever greater strides in AI and these concerns must be addressed somewhere along the line!

It's when they start talking with Austrian accents that we need to worry.

It is when they form together in a configuration named Skynet that we have to start worrying...

If they become sentient then we are are doomed. So we destroy them at the first sign of them evolving.

If they are intelligent, then they will fail a turing test!

We will never see it coming.
