I have no doubt that Stalin, Molotov & Co. were pragmatic & opportunistic enough to take any available opportunity; in any case, their diplomacy was regularly more flexible than either that of the Axis or the Western Allies.
The problem here seems to be the virtual lack of evidence; AFAIK, the purported Soviet-German connection of 1943 is entirely dependant on the sole unverified testimony of Herr Bruno Peter Kleist.
It seems that even the journal that originally published Kleist's story eventually discredited it (1989).
Did Heinz Magenheimer show any independent evidence on this stuff within his book?
