What if Canada was conquered by the US in 1812?

The OP is self-explanatory.

The more you explain the rationale of your answer, the better.

Thanks in advance.

The Americans would be stuck with a bunch of 'bolshie' French-Canadians wanting to either unite with the Mother Country or create a French state independent of the U.S.A. Might even be a 5th column in the Civil War against the Federalists later on. As many Canadians were descendents of 'Tories' the Americans might have been faced with an ongoing insurency or guerilla war.

Oooo! Good question, OP!

I see resistance. A hell of a resistance. The British Empire, of course, would keep on dishing supplies in an effort to liberate Canada.

I would suspect that in time, the US would see the effort of holding Canada as futile and give it up. I could be flat out wrong.

The USA would now be around 60+/- states.

The irony is that had the USA not declared war and invaded in 1812 the result would probably have been the same.

I could see 60 states as well thus totally changing the whole US Civil war later.
The CSA had a large network in Canada and a semi degree of support from a strata of Canadians. The Union could have found itself fighting on two fronts.

I am a French Canadian and having read and having college courses on the matter, I am pretty certain that French Canadians never wanted to reunite with France after the aristocracy went straight back to France following the Conquest. The population that remained in Quebec had no ties with France except a cultural one because the commoners were distinctively "Canadians" whereas aristocrats, who were gone by then, were French and wanted to associate themselves as much as they could to the aristocracy based in the Mother Country.

The two projects were :

-Create a French Canadian Republic

-Join the USA as the 14th colony.

That would've gotten very ugly...

This is why the French didn't join with the Americans over the British, even though the British had conquered them and at first imposed strict British rule.

A relaxing of policy over time won the loyalty of the French in Canada now completely separate from the French in France. The same thing would happen with the French on the East coast. They had been in Canada for so long that they no longer would recognize the French crown as their own, they were or they tried to be independent (but this was unacceptable). They didn't want to fight the British because they were already accustomed to a relaxed British rule, maybe if the Americans would have arrived with the war drums decades earlier they would have found a lot of French support in Quebec.

If Canada had been conquered by the Americans I think it would have to come out of a Canadian (not British ) want to be free. But there were too many already in Canada, that were not willing in any way to be countrymen with the Americans (most of whom were NOT merchants).

If Canada was conquered the possibilities would be endless, I am sure Britain would not forget this any time soon and work to undermine American rule elsewhere. Maybe they invade the US somewhere and spark a big conflict, maybe they work with the Mexican government and back them in the American - Mexican war or the South in the Civil War ect.
