Beserkers drugged themselves before going into battle in order to get into a sort of trance to butcher their enemies mercilessly.

From what I have read, people are still unsure whether it was a drug, getting drunk or working themselves into a frenzy that produced berserkergang

It just turned them into singleminded aggressors. Very similar to what some tribes did in Africa.
