This means that I could go out on weekend to some Diesel Punk or Cyber Punk events instead of Steam Punk ones. A world where oil is the basis for enerygy, what nonsense.

Its also a general sub culture of society as well, people get together and socialise through the artistic/fahsion/fictional medium of 'steampunk.' Much in the same manner that goths or any other sub culture might hang out and do stuff related to that particular niche.
Ive been to a few steam punk events, always had a nice time. Part of thefun is trying to come up and develop/build a costume etc
