I don't disagree.

But if you had to come up with a plausible reason for why the United States and China would be at war, conflict over Taiwan would be the most likely scenario IMO.

Is Japan bound by treaties to join in this war? (Its bases already make it partially involved).

Where is the battle fought? What is the strategic objectives of both sides? Without these it is very difficult to speculate the outcome.

A war will end up in a massive nuclear dust cloud. No countries with thermonuclear weapons ever fought a war against each other before.
