... together with China itself for the middle 1970s (some 900,000,000 for 4,000,000,000 world total).

Naturally, it was the Raj which made most of the bulk for the British Empire (some 300,000,000 by the 1920s).

Maybe you should ; to begin with Wikipedia (English version) has some excellent sources on all this stuff.

What is your definition of powerful? Length? Authority? Achievements? the odds it had to face? or something else?
