There's a fiction book on this. I haven't read it, but it looks good.

Amazon.com: Ruled Britannia (9780451207173): Harry Turtledove: Books

That is interesting, thanks.

Against the storms?
They would have probably been entirely (not just partially) crushed by the British.

By our navy you mean? Because if they got ashore our army at that time wasn't really much to write home about.

I would agree the fleet had to be the line of defense. Had the Spanish been able to transport large elements of the Army of Flanders, let alone other troops, England under Spanish occupation may have become like Ireland under English occupation.

The religious-political dynamic would have been the opposite also.

I cannot imagine England under the Inquisition.

Yup, that's what I meant; sorry for not being more specific.

That said, the Spanish expedition was a strategic mess from its inception; there's no evidence of any significant local support for them and the logistics seemed to have been simply inexistent; hardly the minimal conditions for any successful invasion.

Yup, because the systematic torture and slaughtering of Catholics and other religious dissidents (not to mention witch hunting) under Elizabeth I and her successors was so much rational.

Anyhow, that would be a topic for the Religious Forum of the Chamber.
