What if Europe becomes USE ?

I remember, that last year we talked whit our law teacher about this. Basicly the idea of the whole European Union is to make Europe became one. Going after the US idea, here they apparantly wanted to make the United States of Europe /USE/ - There's going to be the USE and all the countries will became states. All the countries will be using euros, every state will have it's own national language... The president will be chosen by the biggest states /countries/ and he will be responsable for the whole USE.
After we talked about it I googled it and found a lot of sugestions for this, there were some people for it, some were againts it... What do you thing ?

just aesthetically speaking, id go for "European Federation" instead

more seriously, i would imagine that a USE/EuroFed would be one of the first steps towards a united earth government, along with an African Union. i would imagine that, eventually, a USE/EuroFed would come to encompass the former USSR and maybe the Anglosphere as well (except maybe for the US)

Great idea in theory but not in practice as sadly European states themselves are very divided at the moment.

id think that the situation would be more like the balkans; they hate each other, but they know better than to actually come to blows

Too many different cultures and languages, and geographically, the US are very different from the EU. I think that would be a very difficult thing to put to practice.
You also have to think about the power the EU would have. The easterners wouldn't like that very much. The US and the EU would basically "form an alliance" and the others would probably see that as a danger.
I think it would be much better for countries with similar cultures and languages to join each other and reduce the number of countries in Europe. But of course, most people wouldn't want to do that, especially those who live in small countries and probably fought for their independence. And I have to admit there is a risk of extinction for some cultures.
I am in fact one of the few Portuguese who find the idea of forming an "Iberian Nation" very attractive, as long as the Portuguese National Identity isn't lost. Most Portuguese tend to see this as a matter of "master vs slave" instead of a union, because of the differences in size between Spain and Portugal, though.
