Attilla the Hun vs Genghis Khan

Both men had very similar armies and areas of dominance. though at different periods. however technology did not develope to much within the gap of time between the 2 men. if both were to fight with their hordes with the Huns come out on top or would the Mongols?

this is a tough battle as both armies used bow cavalry, the Huns used better Armour but the mongols conquered a much larger empire and expanded and adapted to many types of warfare against different nations. thus it may ultimately come down to leadership. either Genghis or Atilla?

so who was the better leader and who would win in a battle?

- both men did not have similar armies, the army of Genghis would be superior in all fields to that of Attila, for starters in organisation - organisation into a disciplined force was what made the army of Genghis so succesful in the first place, since there was little other difference with previous nomad powers like the Jin or Xianbei.
- unlike Genghis Atilla never displayed tremendous generalship nor did he have at his disposal a host of talent such as Jebe and Subotai and you name them.

So Atilla really has little on Genghis. Nothing really.

The Mongols would have Hun for breakfast. Or perhaps even incorporate them into their own army.

ok i meant they were similar in that they originated from the steppes and that they were both great horse archers. but don't you think the hundreds of years of adaptation and experience would have meant that the huns may have had an edge over older Mongolian tactics? i still believe that Ghenghis khan will win. however the huns were more unorthodox as pointed out and so they may have used unconventional tactics as opposed to the mongols. the 1 key advantage Attila may have also had . is the he had incorporated other more modern nations such as the Syrians. and so in a cavalry melee engagement i think the huns will come out on top.

This poll isn't based off Age of Empires II is it?

Anyway, Ghengis by a few million squared kilometers. The organization of the Mongol army was astoundingly modern.

yes i agree they were fairly modern. but they infantry may have also been no match to attila's. as his were well trained mercenaries.

The Mongols would have steamrolled the Huns. As Gaius Valerius said, they were better in every single aspect than the Huns, especially generalship and organization.

but i think some of you are also overlooking the difference between the huns and the mongols. firstly the hunnic cavalry would have matched those of the mongols, they had superior close combat infantry and they also had other tribes such as the syrians giving them a much larger diversity than the mongols. under the leadership of the attila they were very powerful . they were only beaten because a coalition was formed against attila. i still believe in ghenghis to win the battle . but it will be much closer than has been stated. the huns may win because of their unorthodox and horde-like nature, by simply crushing ghenghis khan under their weight.

Probably Djengiz Khan would not only win, but also be more likely to recover from a defeat should the Huns under Atilla ever best them on the battlefield.

Temudjin had unified the tribes and rose to kingship from nowhere, he was the center of a new aristocracy owing allegiance to none but him, his kingdom was highly centralized. Atilla on the other hand was the product of an established, highly independent aristocracy. Their loyalty depended on Atilla's ability to provide loot and booty.

Atilla i believe wasn't in the royal saddle firmly enough to permit a successful general like Subotai.
