Vermont doesn't join the US

Suppose the Republic of Vermont did not join the United States, what would have been its ultimate fate? I remember reading how many in Vermont considered joining British Quebec, feeling a grearer cultural connection to Canada than the rest of the weak American Union. How would this have impacted American-British and later Canadian relations? If Vermont remained completely independent, how would it have evolved? I suspect it would be like a Switzerland of North America. Any thoughts?

I can see the colony being eventually overwhelmed by pro-American forces
and settlers. It's such a small sliver of a state, I don't see it being a major
power player.

Declares itself a tax haven and its location next to Wall street, hmm that's a difficult one. I guess it would have a GNP to rival Luxembourg and if that's not enough money Las Vegas II as well, works for Monaco casino town and tax haven and New Yorkers wouldn't have to all the way out west. Vermontians should kick themselves every day of their lives for joining the US.

If the Republics of Texas and California did not maintain their independence, why would Vermont have? Vermonters favored joining the US, but how was debated. The state convention assembled after the US Constitution was ratified voted (Wiki-detail-check ) 105-2 for petition to join.

(Vermont joined a a "free state" with Kentucky as a "slave state" - so they were already playing that game.)

If you look on a map, the western border of Vermont (northern half) is the strategic water route to the Hudson Valley from British North America. That was fought over both in the F & I War and the war of independence. There is no way that was not going to be controlled by the US.

Agreed. If anything, an independent Vermont in any form would not have survived the era of Manifest Destiny.

I suspect that Vermont could have survived Manifest Destiny. If all eyes were on the western frontier, Vermont would have been an afterthought. Just as ambitions to expand into Canada were forgotten after the war of 1812, I imagine that this small mountain Republic would be forgotten as well.
