Antiquity, Today

ancient times are one of my FAVORITE historical periods(along with WWII) and i sometimes have to wonder: what would the world be like if it never "modernized". by that i mean, whatever makes the modern world what it is never occurred, what would the world be like?

Europe would be ruled by either barbarian kings or the Romans. The Middle East would still be the most advanced civilisation and a lot more stable. And America would still be controlled by its rightful inhabitants.

Unless the Vikings had guns i doubt they'd be able to take America. Even the US government was defeated many times by Indians armed with bows and arrows who used the terrain to ambush and pick off the cavalry.

China may have been able to do this as they had large junks capable of crossing the Pacific and the manpower to back up their technology. Repeating crossbows, cavalry and scale armor would give them an edge over the Indians.

Re: Antiquity, Today

I'd love to be a simple citizen of late Classical or early Hellenistic Olynthus, living in my nice 3,000 square foot house, dining on fish, olives, goat, figs, cheese, and wine all day, and owning a vinyard in the countryside, selling wine out of my the store in the front of my house. I would take advantage of my democratic rights, and I would serve my city as an elected magistrate from time to time. I would also soak in all of the festivals, games, and theatre whenever possibly at the local venues, and would take the odd week off here and there in the off season to travel around the countryside and stay in the nice Inns and Villas dotting the landscape.

I would own a horse or two that lived in the small stable at the back of my house, a nice suit of armour in case I was ever called to protect my city, and live into my 70's as was quite common for the citizens of the great city-states.

Doesn't sound so bad at all.

Oh and umm to answer your question.. Yes the world would be like what I said, we'll go with that. I'm in an optimistic mood today.
