When did WW2 start

Now usually i read that WW2 started in 1939 with the German invasion of Poland however i have also heard people saying they think WW2 started in 1937 when Japan invaded China and other's have said they believe it didn't start until 1941 with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. So my question is when do you guys think it started? In my opinion i think Pearl Harbor and the following declaration of war from Germany on the US was when it became a WW and that before that it was two large separate wars one in Asia and one in Europe.

I am more than willing to recognize 1 Sept., 1939 as the starting point.

There's also 1936 with the Spanish Civil War, 1939 the Winter War and Barbarossa 1941.

I would say the war started in 1936 but became a world war in 1939.

I wonder if Second Thirty Years War idea will become more and more popular as time goes on, it does encapsulate a period that is inextricably linked.

I see your point, but I think you confuse the proper name "World War II" with "world war". It's like metalanguage: proper name cannot be confused with the meaning behind it. Look at the famous painting "The Treachery of Images" by René Magritte and you'll get my point.
The more important thing is that history is not accurate. For an example: Alexander Graham Bell is known as the inventor of the telephone. The problem is that Antonio Meucci constructed such device earlier, but simply couldn't pay for his patent. Moreover. Bolshevik Revolution and World War I have one thing in common: sharp, clear starting point, a symbol. Shots from Aurora, assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. For me, shots from Schleswig-Holstein make a perfect opening to the war, even though Wielun was attacked earlier.
Concluding, for me, war called "World War II" started in 1939, and when it actually became world war is not important here.

Basically some separate wars were already ongoing, it only became WW II as these local conflicts began to be drawn in a pan-European conflict. You could very well say it only became a world war when the USA declared war on the nazis, although of course, they'd been de facto supporting the anti-german war effort since the 1940's.

The official euro-centric vision ignores the ongoing Sino-Japanese conflict until it conflates with the European war after the Japanese attack on Malaysia, Thailand, Hawaii, Philippines and several other points the 7/8 December of 1941 (depending on which side of the International Date Line is considered).

Oficcially, WW2 began on September 1, 1939 at 04:45 am local time (03:35 GMT) with the first shots of the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein against the Polish military transit depot in the peninsula of Westerplatte in Danzig (Gdansk).

If we consider the alternative view of using the first shot of any military conflict that would eventually conflate into WW2 as the opening hallmark (actually my own position), that would be according to most Chinese & Japanese sources the Lugouquiao ("Marco Polo Bridge") incident of July 7, 1937 circa 23:00 local time ("Second Sino-Japanese War").

Any previous date for the opening mark of SJW-w would be IMHO an exaggeration, as there was clearly no true continuous combat between both sides, in spite of their overt hostility.
