Surely one needs some restriction of area and period to make this a meaningful question?

How about Stalingrad, it was certainly a major battle. Had the Nazis grabbed the oil in southern Russia it would have been possible for them to turn their other fronts around and change history. It could even be argued that had the Nazis captured Russia east of the Urals, it might have turned the Soviet's substantial productive forces (even armies) against the Allies both in Europe and later China.

The Nazis were really never the same after Stalingrad.

There is the thought that the earlier in time a decisive battle was fought, the greater was the decision. This would be because more centuries were affected by whatever chain of events ensued.

So, Marathon.

All hail Platĉa!

The first battle ever fought in human history - it gave the rest of us an idea that's kept us preoccupied ever since...

Battles tend to be highly overrated; human evolution has proven perfectly possible without them.

It is tempting to agree with Salah; I'm naturally thinking about some kind of primordial warlike struggle between Human species; the most common proposal has been of course a Sapiens vs. Neanderthal clash.
However, to this very day the mere existence of such pre-historical battle remains entirely speculative and, IMHO, quite unlikely.

That said, the OP is ultimately an entirely relative, panglossian and frankly chauvinistic issue; let say Marathon and Thermopylae are often suggested here (even if Plataea would be a for more logical option under the same rationale) fundamentally because it is assumed that;
1) the battle in question would have determined the ultimate survival of one side (highly disputable in the best case more often than not) and
2) the eventual survival of the other side would have been such a terrible thing ....

Think of the major wars, then each decisive battle. There is no battle that was the most decisive. I would agree with Trafalgar and definitely Stalingrad, but not Waterloo. Napoleon would still have to deal with the Austrians forces assembled on the eastern border of France, and his forces would be tired by then. Even though the Austrian armies were taking their sweet time, France was just to worn out at that point. Fighting is a natural part of human society, I don't think the clash between humans and Neanderthals, or any one battle set in motion wars and fighting in the future. Look at gorillas and monkeys, or any animal for that matter. They have territorial wars all the time. Ants in particular come to mind, with a kind of organized war machine.

It's also a question of greater total effect. Plataea ended Xerxes army in Greece, yes; but it was Salamis that ended the invasion. The destruction in detail of Xerxes fleet meant that his immense army would encounter problems of resupply, that is, it would begin to starve. Xerxes himself left the field after that battle, leaving his army in Greece.

I’d say it was the battle of Nagasaki. The bombing brought the war between the US and Japan to an end, killed about 100 000 people in an instant and changed the prospect of war in a way no other battle ever has.
