My favorite general/field captain is King Gustavus II Adolphus (1594-1632). He was one of the last great warrior kings who turned the tide against the Holy Roman Empire's virtually uninterrupted success during the 30 Years' War (1618-1648). His character and leadership abilities were larger than life. In an American (Civil War) context, he had qualities of a Lee, Stonewall and Sherman combined. Like Jackson he gave his life as a result of bravery on the battlefield. Not to mention he was as much of an innovator in all three branches (infantry, cavalry and artillery) of the army as any single soldier in the last 500+ years. Lastly, redheads rule.

He died during the 30 years war. The great Northern war started in 1700. Charles XII was the King of Sweden by that time. He was another excellent military commander.

Gustavus was better. He was an innovator inventing or putting into play new weapons or tactics. Also brilliant at logistics and organization. Plus, as a field general he was unsuprassed. My second favorite general after Hannibal.

I liked Charles XII, he was a much better commander than his adversaries, just numbers at the end of the day.

Charles was a brilliant general but a bad statesman. He conquered most of Poland and such!

He was brilliant but he needed more troops which he should have recruited. He ahouldnt have fought auch a large enemy outnumbered.
