The problem with young Edgar Atheling, brother-earls Edwin & Morcar (and Earl Waltheof to a large extent) was that not one of them was known to be very experienced in war or is known to have fought at Santlache/Senlac/Hastings?

Plus, in the three mighty battles of 1066, all effective commanders and warriors (huscarls) had been wiped out, crippling Anglo-Saxon England in the face of the utterly ruthless and capable William.
