The Tanks Of August.

A very good write up of the 08/08/08 conflict between Russia and Georgia. Almost down to street level. I remember I was surprised at the speed which Russia reacted and which the Georgians started to run.

Seems like the Georgians had a good plan, too bad they didn't think it would be a fight. Georgian intelligence had to have been really poor to not know of what the Russians had just 40 miles away. Anyway it's in PDF format and its a long article (144 pages) but it's full of juicy tidbits.

brilliant find Mangas iv saved it to my hard drive and will read it once i have the time. it looks very exhaustive in covering all events and other bits like post war relations and known military equipment sent to Georgia before the conflict. and it was forwarded by David Glantz who is one of the top historians on the soviet union in WW2, all the better.

I'm about half way through and it's pretty detailed. There was a lot going on there that we never heard about. I didn't know the Georgians assaulted Tshinvali twice. I also heard that the Russians were quite pleased with the performance of the Tochka-u missiles, I guess they shot up the port of Poti with them. Not a good weapon for pin point targets but if you want to put a small port out of action from far away just shoot off 50 or so and the job is done.
