Most Powerful Countries throughout history

I'm interested in which countries people view as the most powerful throughout history.

Please post on whichever dates you feel comfortable with, ie:

1914: 1. German Empire 2. British Empire 3. France and Empire 4. USA

or

1648-1815: 1. France

or

1580: 1. Spain 2. France 3. China

I posted in the military forums because until most recently, War was the be-all, end-all of nation-states. Now days, the military is playing an ever decreasing role, in most respects (with some exceptions).

I understand this topic might be too broad to get much interest, but I have found it hard to find any source which lists the years as they go by with the corresponding power rankings. So, I guess I will be happy with whatever I get.

You are right it is a very Euro-centric p.o.v.

However it is a rather accurate point of view if the question would be ''most powerful countries troughout European history''

Neither the Ottomans nor the Timurids were too powerful by European standards. We can take an arbitrary figure and say that each 10 Muslim soldiers are worth about 2 or 3 Europeans.

I should edit my list though. In 500BC, Athens was already showing signs of power. So scratch the Achaemenids.
