Most Powerful Countries throughout history


I'm interested in which countries people view as the most powerful throughout history.

Please post on whichever dates you feel comfortable with, ie:

1914: 1. German Empire 2. British Empire 3. France and Empire 4. USA

or

1648-1815: 1. France

or

1580: 1. Spain 2. France 3. China

I posted in the military forums because until most recently, War was the be-all, end-all of nation-states. Now days, the military is playing an ever decreasing role, in most respects (with some exceptions).

I understand this topic might be too broad to get much interest, but I have found it hard to find any source which lists the years as they go by with the corresponding power rankings. So, I guess I will be happy with whatever I get.

VI-VII century: Byzantine Empire
1220-1250: Holy Roman Empire(under Frederick II)
1503-1648: Spain
1453-1683: Ottoman Empire
1380s-1405: Timurid Empire

Neither the Ottomans nor the Timurids were too powerful by European standards. We can take an arbitrary figure and say that each 10 Muslim soldiers are worth about 2 or 3 Europeans.

I should edit my list though. In 500BC, Athens was already showing signs of power. So scratch the Achaemenids.
