Main Battle Tanks 2012

I am quite sure there are several out there that can provide some insight on this topic. I am by no means an expert on the subject but I was perusing Wikipedia on main battle tanks of several world powers and was curious as to how they'd stack up against each other in open combat. Is the Abrams still the big kid on the block? What other nations have anything legit?

Thanks for the feedback, forum.

The Leopard tank is a new upstart, but as far as I know the M1A2 Abrams is the best tank this side of Alpha Centauri.

Yes I would imagine the Germans know a thing or two about building tanks

Thanks for the quick input

To my knowledge the Leopard is the best tank in the world.

Actually, many people think the Leopard is the best tank in the world because it has sold the most. But there is a flaw to that statement. The Germans had a fire-sale years back reducing their number of tanks from the thousands down to a few hundred which allowed other countries to get these tanks right off the German shelf already built for cheap. Also, the Leopard tanks don't have as much battle experience as the m1a2 abrams and challenger 2 tanks. These are the top 3 tanks in my opinion:
1. Challenger 2(if not due to the chobham 2 armour, it would be tied with the m1a2 abrams)
2. M1A2 Abrams Tank (look at above statement, also once the m1a3 abrams comes out, the m1 will be the new top tank)
3. Leopard II(not enough battle experience hurts it on my ranking list but is still inferior to the m1 and challenger series tanks)

Who has the best tank in the world? It's kind of a stupid discussion, along the lines of comparing penis sizes. It isn't the size of the waves, it's the motion of the ocean. I'll take a T-34/76 with an experienced crew up against an M-1 Abrams crewed by teenagers who learned how to use it on a PS 2 any day.

The best tank in the world is the one with the best crew in it. I think all NATO tanks are very well built and basically equal when you get down to the nitty gritty. There are differences and trade offs but when it comes to capability they're all very capable. In the right hands.

That aside I'll put in my penny. Give me a good veteran crew in a tank in the Mid East and I will take the British Challenger II. In Europe's heavily urbanized environment I don't want a tank at all, if pressed I would still go with the Challenger. In Russia I'll take the T-90 or depending on the terrain, the BMT with Kornet ATGMs.

I like the Challenger because of it's look, nothing against the M1 or Leopard. They're all good.

It's not sexy enough. Reminds me of an old Dodge. I think its a good tank though.
