Bagger was talking about the elite units only. That's what I was referring to.

Market Garden wasn't a total failure. It won passage through a troublesome section of real estate but it's gains were very expensive.

It wasn't stupidity, it was Monty's hubris that made him want to be the one to end the war with one big thrust. It was too ambitious and gambled too much on the success of a single column of troops.

I did not want to open a thread for it, because I just have a special question.
I got post from berlin about one of my grandfathers. I knew all about his military career till november 1941, the rest was unknown for me. Now I fortunately know more. After his severe wounding near Twer/Kalinin in november 1941 he stayed in hospital till january 1943 and was the commanded to a replacement batallion, exactly a convalescent company, then. On september 18th 1944 he was send to stop the operation Market Garden with the Grenadier batallion Münster as part of the Division 406 zbV and the Korps "Feldt" and fought with his unit between Groesbeek and Mook, mainly against the 505th Parachute regiment and the Coldstream guards. I collected a lot of informations in the last days. Does somebody here has detailed maps, battle orders, combat reports from the time between september 18th and 30th from the region between Groesbeek and Mook? Thanks.

Would you say that it had any bearing on the the failure to secure the Arnhem Bridge?

The 82nd was given too many objectives and the capture of the bridge at Nijmegen was not given top priority by Browning. As to their performance let's just take Browning's remark at face value who called them "the best division in the world".

Just because one General makes such a comment, does not make it true.

Their is a difference between opinion and fact. This is simply a matter of opinion.
