It was the 60's, science had won WW2, cured disease and was bringing in a shiny new world with hover cars and personnal robots, the big health scares like thalidomide, dioxins and all the other science scandals were still in the future.

So nobody much thought about it because they didn't know they needed to.

No, certainly not.

RFK basically catalyzes my views on the war, on the South and North Vietnamese regimes, and US involvement.

Yes, if stopping Communism and establishing a democratic South Vietnam, you would have had a more peaceful, more prosperous, more dignified state in at least half of the present SRV, comparable to the situation on the Korean peninsula (though the Vietnamese leadership has, to the edge of real democratic reforms, proved itself more caring about the needs of its population). But engaging over 500,000 troops for the only purpose of wasting billions of dollars and millions of human lives for the more likely end of strengthening an totalitarian, extremist movement is not commendable.

Simply put, no.

If nuclear bombs are made a mainstay of conventional warfare, then it will lead to reprisals one day, or the globe being held in a grip of fear. The cold war was enough.

The idea that we should have nuked Hanoi is almost as nuts as Patton's wanting to fight the Soviets right after WWII.

And not to mention the fact that Nuking a "Third World" country would have made Stalin look like a nun caring for lepers.

I think it would have better if Agnew and Kissinger had jumped over the table in Paris and kicked the measly little asses of the Viet diplomats, then jumped on the table doing high fives and yelling,

"America F*** yeah!"

Considering the threads that have previously been closed here, I'm quite surprised that this thread is still open. I did see a post where the opening posted said he was 15, so will leave it at that.
