I remember my uncle telling me that, during the Cuban missile crisis when he thought he was going to die in a Soviet nuclear strike, he cursed the Truman administration for not letting Patton attack the USSR before they had The Bomb.

I seriously doubt it. Perhaps they'd nuke a US ally.
But nevertheless, there would be serious blowback for the United States. Vietnamese on both sides would not be too pleased about a chunk of their country being turned into a radioactive wasteland.

The United States should have never gotten involved in Vietnam in the first place. All the talk about Communist expansion and the global communist conspiracy is crap. By 1969, China and the USSR were going at it. By 1972 Nixon was in China and detente was starting up. 1978, communist Vietnam invades communist Cambodia. 1979 Communist China attacks communist Vietnam. The 1970's saw a lot of commie on commie action.

The USA shouldn't have been in Vietnam to begin with.
So definitely, NO, they should not have nuked Hanoi

Without weighing in on the moral rightness of the Vietnam War as a whole, nuking Hanoi would have been an atrocity of an entirely new type. It would certainly lead to reprisals against the USA and its allies. The South Vietnamese would have been pretty ticked off too, as we would have just nuked their cousins for no reason.

The war was unsymmetrical enough without introducing nuclear weapons anyway. Looking at the combat record of US vs VC and even NVA units, the American's best bet for success lay in forcing the war to follow an even more conventional course, as opposed to treading any new ground.

A air and ground invasion of the north would make some military sense, but for a plethora of political reasons it wasn't considered at the high levels of the American and South Vietnamese governments.

No. It had embassies of many countries, like the USSR and China. I think a nuke retaliation would have happened. Also in a historical note, Haiphong harbor had many ships of sino and soviet block origin. The US was careful not to bomb these ships to avoid a spreading of the conflict. Haiphong is about 50 miles from Hanoi a nuke would have killed many Poles, Russians, Chinese and NK citizens and sailors.

It would have been a bad decision to have nuked Hanoi. Chances are the Chinese would have gotten more involved then they were if Hanoi had been nuked.

When it came to communist Vietnam, the US should have tried whooing North Vietnam from the Soviets orbit. Afterall, the US had ties with nations that were undemocratic rightleaning dicatorships. So what would it matter if the US had ties to an undemocratic leftleaning nation, North Vietnam.

US even had the Russians has allies in WW II. I do not think during the war that they cared that much that the Soviets were communist or not has long has it benefitted them.

To the US it might have been the Domino effect but to North Vietnam if was a war of Independence and the uniting of all of Vietnam.

^^ This.

Nuking Hanoi would have been an obscene war crime. Pointless, unnecessary, counterproductive.

Some people here seem to be simply absolutely unfamiliar with the very basics of the concept of Nuclear Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD)

Not exactly rocket science...
Well, it's actually exactly rocket science, but even so not that hard to grasp
