i was just wondering whether there had been any conflict/war where there was not a treaty signed or agreed at the end of it? doesnt have to be a large conflict, but large enough for people to know etc....

When North Vietnam completed the Vietnam war there was no treaty.

North Korea and South Korea are technically still at war.

The Third Punic War Rome waged against Carthage did not end in a treaty. By the end there wasn't anybody left to make a treaty with.

As already mentioned the Korean war is one that comes well to mind.

One that is usually stated is the fact that Berwick Upon Tweed is still at war with Russia and that a peace treaty was only signed recently with the Russian signitory jokingly saying 'Finally the Russians can now sleep peacefully in their beds'

But in fact this is a common fallacy. I think even the 1982 board game Trivial Pursuit cites it as a Question.

Supposedly when the Crimean War broke out Queen Victoria signed the decleration stating that 'Victoria, Queen of Great Britain, Ireland, Berwick-upon-Tweed and all British Dominions' were at war with Russia. Only with the concluding Treaty of Paris leaving off Berwick upon Tweed. Although this is as much an tall story. - It was never mentioned in the declearation anyhow.

Intresting 'story' nonetheless.

The Seminole Tribe of Florida never surrendered to the U.S. government after a series of conflicts (in the 19th century) in which 15,000 U.S. soldiers were killed or died from sickness all at the cost of over 40 million dollars. To this day the Seminoles call themselves the "Unconquered People." In the late 50's and early 60's agreements (not treaties) were entered into in which Seminole sovereignty over certain lands was acknowledged. There was also financial compensation for seized lands. It is said that the Florida Seminoles are the only American Indian group never to have signed a treaty with the United States.

When Britain declared war against Russia (Crimean war) Queen victoria signed the declaration as Queen of Gt. Britain, Ireland, Berwick Upon Tweed and British dominions.
The town of Berwick Upon Tweed in north east England had changed hands between Scotland and England so many times, that it was regarded as a seperate entity.
When Queen victoria signed the treaty of Paris (1856) to end the war, someone forgot to put Berwick Upon Tweed back on the list.

If this is true, (and it's somewhat debatable?) then Russia and Berwick Upon Tweed are still at war.

Civil wars do not end with treaties unless the rebels win.

Interesting point. Which raises another. Was Lincoln's insistence in calling the rebellion a 'police action' merely spin or legally correct?
