Actually, although the battlecruiser HMS Hood
had an emotional place in the hearts of the Royal Navy, she was already long obsolete by the beginning of World War II (HMS Hood
was laid down back in 1916). Her design was irretrievably flawed (in fact, the lessons learned from the Battle of Jutland in WWI had prompted a completely different approach to capital ship designs after the Hood
was launched). The fact that she was dispatched rather quickly by the Bismarck
shouldn't have been a big surprise to anyone.
As for the Bismarck
itself, while larger and more powerful ships were certainly employed in WWII (by both Japan and the United States), she was the first "modern" battleship to be commissioned. At that time, for example, the United States' most modern active battleship was already nearly 20 years old. Every other navy was playing "catch up" to try to match the Bismarck
in terms of firepower, size, and speed.
By the time WWII ended - and consequently brought an end to the era of the battleship - the Bismarck
would end up ranked as the sixth largest battleship to see action during the war.
