It doesn't matter what country they are from because all soldiers are humans and therefore inherently equal. What matters is training, morale, equipment etc. Other factors like culture, upbringing, and religion could make a difference.

For example, in one documentary about Stalingrad, a German survivor claims that man to man, the Soviets were superior soldiers. They were used to the frigid temperatures and poor living conditions. They appeared to him more willing to die and more willing to go to extreme lengths to remove the invaders. I THINK it was in this documentary here:

croats got same training as austrians and hungarians. i guess it is possible that an ethnicity is "born" for combat, just like asians are smarter, africans are better built, and white ppl are in between. and i shall repeat: 1 regiment vs. heavily fortified city. similiar for other battles, outnumbered several times, and in our independence war severly outequiped

Bull. What the soldier is fighting for, training, morale, equipment, leadership and most imp cultural and social upbringing are the determinate factors.there is no 'born' for war ethnicity.yes harsh environment in the upbringing might make few peoples more capabe to endure war's hardship, but they certainly weren't 'born' that way.their environment moulded them.

well, there is something that makes us pretty good. equip. and training not, this was proven in our independence war. our enviroment is same as dozen of medditerranian countrirs out there. culture, well, it was ruined by 8 centuries of rulership from austrians and hungarians. leadership and morale are the only things we are left with.

Just out of curiosity, you wrote this:

So did this happen in the 17th or in the 19th century? Can't say I'm aware of either of these two events.

Isn't this a bit open ended.
I mean the role technology and tactics plays makes it quite difficult to have a definitive answer.
For instance, the Spartans were famously great warriors, but they obviously wouldn't have won in a conflict against many later societies, hence wouldn't that make modern armies the greatest warriors?
So what exactly are the criteria?
