I just realized that I didn’t have a proper clip of Goodbye Horses (Silence of the Lambs). I mean, I can’t post the clip from the film, but here’s the song.

My next pick has been a favorite of mine ever since I was a little kiddo… “Can You Picture That” from The Muppet Movie (1979).

The song is part of the original movie score written by Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher, performed by Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem.

My pick: Burn by The Cure from the move The Crow.

So if Heavy Metal was a tribute to 70's rock, then The Crow was partially a tribute to 90's alternative. The creator of the graphic novel was a big music lover and that transferred to the movie. Great soundtrack with original hits from The Cure, Stone Temple Pilots, Violent Femmes, a Joy Division cover by Nine Inch Nails, and an eerie end track by Canadian Jane Siberry.

An underrated movie with a kick ... soundtrack.

The Cure: Burn.

Stone Temple Pilots: Big Empty

Violent Femmes: Color Me Once

Nine Inch Nails: Dead Souls

Jane Siberry: It Can't Rain All The Time

Cars.
Brilliant kids movie, with brilliant music to boot. I think my little brother saw this at least 20 times when he was 10.

Goodfellas: Layla Piano
This film is filled with all sorts of great applications of music, but the song with the strongest connection to the film is the piano exit of Layla, which is more or less the theme song of the film. Unfortunately, the parts it plays at have violence and dead bodies. Here’s the song:

The sequence following the discovery of all the body’s left from Jimmy the Gent’s murder spree against the Mafia associates is a little too violent, so I’ll do this scene instead, trivia—the producer of this song, Phil Spector was a crazed stalker and murderer:

The movie where Scorsese pioneered his particular use of rock and pop classics to tell a story, Mean Streets (1973). Here is his use of Jumpin' Jack Flash, which Scorsese uses to introduce Johnny Boy (De Niro) through Charlie's (Keitel) perception of him:

Btw @Theodoric, I have listed 'Layla Piano' as 'Layla', as the slide guitar solos that happen before the piano section also feature in the sequence that you're referring to (but I'm happy to edit it to specify the piano section).

One of the best uses of music in Goodfellas is towards the end when the music keeps switching between different songs (incl. Monkey Man by the Rolling Stones, and Magic Bus by The Who) to reflect Henry Hill's frazzled state of mind.

Man, we need more Blues in this thread - Muddy Waters kicks some serious arse (can't find the scene that this plays)

This, however, is an awesome scene and another awesome track

Needless to say, that's another off my list (intended especially for the Mannish Boy track).

Next is a film that's gone from deterioration in obscurity to one of the greatest films of the 90s in just over a decade: A Brighter Summer Day. A four hour Taiwanese epic loosely based on a real-life incident (the literal Chinese title gives away the ending), the English title comes from the Elvis Presley's "Are You Lonesome Tonight", a song title highlighting two key aspects of the film: isolation (on an individual and societal scale) and American/Western cultural influence on traditional society. Set in 60s Taiwan, millions of mainland Chinese fled the country after the Communist Party won the Civil War. Uprooted from their homeland and growing up in an uneasy environment, the younger generation join street gangs for a sense of identity in an uncertain future.

The song I've picked is sung by Cat, best friend of the protagonist Xiao S'ir. Cat dreams of meeting Elvis and can't speak a word of English, he gets Xiao S'ir's sister to transcribe the lyrics for him. Here he belts out a haunting rendition of "Angel Baby" by Rosie & the Originals, the lyrics providing an ironic commentary on the conversation between Xiao S'ir and Jade (girlfriend of gang leader Sly): earlier in the film Xiao S'ir saw two lovers kissing in a darkened classroom believing it was Sly and Jade (it was another .... Ming).

After the film's release the cast members got together and released an album featuring all the songs in the film.
