Until 1890, powerful European politicians, e.g. Bismarck, promoted constructive collaboration, between & amongst European states. But, after Bismarck was sacked, European politics rapidly was "railed" onto a track, towards war, in one generation, e.g. Hitler was born, in 1889. I understand, that, militant reactionary groups, e.g. Thule Society, emerged during those decades, spinning 'nationalism' & 'patriotism' into provocations, enflaming antagonisms, and bringing about world-wide war; and that the 'sacred pagan emblems', of those groups, were painted onto war-machines, by soldiers, during the conflict, cp. The Red Baron (film). If so, then perhaps a whole generation of European youth, lacking other leadership, were lured into reactionary groups (which were 'counter-culture', in-so-far as they were often anti-Christian, e.g. 'pagan') ? And, by the mutual antagonisms, that those groups perpetrated upon themselves (taken together), successfully spun 'nationalism' into world-wide war ?
(Tragically, millions of casualties later, liberal groups, offered themselves, as a 'pre-packaged solution', to the problematic quagmire, caused by barbarian Europe's thence-discredited ancien [sic] regimes, stepping into the "settling dust", as the guarantors, of a Permanent Peace, i.e. "modernity", after the thusly-provoked "war to end all wars" allegedly demonstrated a justification, for Perpetual Pacification.)
