Can anyone point to an earlier document where another country recognized that America existed? I am trying to figure out if this is the first international treaty where America is recognized as an entity.

The French recognized the US as an independent nation in 1778 after Saratoga; they where the first country to do this. Benjamin Franklin was America's first overseas diplomat (stationed in Paris), and delegates of the continental congress worked with representatives of the French government to secure the alliance.

Then there's the treaty of Paris, where Britain was forced to recognize the US as a sovereign entity.

I didn't know he was stationed in France, now the sleeping with whores all the time makes more sense.
