Just finished 1983:The World at the Brink, a history of the year including Able Archer and KAL 007. Interesting but terrifying stuff.
I haven't read the book but have read others on the period and If I remember correctly Ronnie Reagan deserves credit in Able Archer.

I don’t think he gets much, if any, credit during Able Archer, it seems that NATO was completely ignorant of the panic in the USSR. After the exercise, then yes.

The main question that came out of it is was the Russian panic real or feigned in order to get the West to be less belligerent? Also the CIA came out badly for not anticipating the USSR’s fear of attack under cover of an exercise.
