personally I doubt they worked all that hard...... its not a feature of med cultures......

you can still see it in places like Tunisia or Morocco or Egypt, in the more remote parts where little has changed over centuries ..... people have plenty of time on their hands (in fact they are often bored)

there would be busy times of course (mostly when the crops needed to be brought in) .... but this would not be the rule, leaving plenty of time to talk, lounge about etc....

Then there is the weather.... when its very hot, activity naturally decreases.... which is why northerners visiting southern countries (typically in summer) come away with the impression that the locals are lazy....
