the republic was at the plenum of its wealth and power ,
ruled by prominent families
a new man manipulated the election process and won legally the top executive position
the old families swore revenge and started a constant harassment of him , his family and all his supporters ,
once in power he proclaimed a new policy ,a change of historical proportion ,
this led to various wars and losses of allies
the old families conducted a vengeful judicial destruction of his son , leading to his imprisonment and death .
a broken man he resigned and died soon afterward ,
under pressure from the people which loved him he was reluctantly given a state funeral .

the Venician dodge Foscari went against the deep state and eventually lost even as his policies were continued

Francesco Foscari.

A giant in Venetian history [Ca' Foscari is still there in Venice].

For the period when he lived, he enjoyed a long life and this allowed him to make all the steps to get the power with calm. After more than 20 years of political career he became doge [so a comparison with present personages "in the office" without previous political career is a quite out of context].

What we can say is that he indulged a bit too much in military activities [even if he enlarged the domains of Venice, the period wasn't the most suitable: earthquakes and plagues made the population suffer while the doge was thinking to conquer this or that land ...].

the issue was the growth of Milanese power , the fall of Genoa independence through the lack of "retro terra"
and the need to insure some homeland safety rather than worrying about middle East markets
those were real concerns and while the wars were ruinous , as wars are , this policy was followed and pursued even after Foscari death .

Ultimately an imperial state has to juggle the empire need against the need of the homeland
