Chickamauga
Butcher and war criminal.

As CG, all the war crimes inflicted on CS POWs fall to Grant's responsibility. There was a formal campaign to starve and torture Confederate prisoners in union POW camps. Google "immortal 600."

Sherman was probably the best tactician of the American Civil war, he continuously turned the flanks of his Southern opponents, knew what it required to win in a real "total war", and took strong assertive actions in ways few other would have dared.

Fighting offensively as Sherman did in virtually every campaign is a solid test of a military mind.
I think a good argument could be made that Thomas was his equal or near equal. Sherman was more aggressive, but Thomas was more varied - capable of defending a position.

Regardless of who was better, both were excellent and the equal of any commander in the Americas up to WWII.
OT but Thomas vs. Jackson would be an interesting hypothetical.

1. "Old Slow Trot" hammered CSA armies.
2. "War criminal." You must be a Southerner. Texas barbeque is better than your barbeque!
No crimes occurred like the massacres under Forrest. Wasting enemy supplies and structures is a time honored tradition back to the English, Mongols, Assyrians.
3. Chickamauga was a defeat, brought on by a hole in the line and the greatness that is Longstreet. Prior to that his maneuvers were especially skilled and completing obejctives without casualties.
4. "Butcher" Yea, you're going to have to cite where Grant was in charge of Andersonville etc. Also, a reminder: prisoner exchanges were ended after CSA started executing black troops as a matter of policy (how Godwinesque of them).
