Misinterpretation Of the Canals
The story of Atlantis has been translated from Greek to English by several people. Each one has a slightly different interpretation of the terrain features. You probably know that the wrong word, incorrect grammar, and untrue assumptions can kill a good story. That is what happened to Plato’s story. When we read the descriptions of the terrain features found on the small island, we confused the three moats surrounding the castle with the three canals surrounding the island. Also, since the moats circle the tiny hill, we mistakingly believed that the island of Atlantis was circular. To add to the problem, the small hill that held the royal castle was called a mountain.
