Latin continued to be used in scholarly writings up to the 19th century.
This includes philosophical, political as well as scientific works. Most of the important works in the 17 th century were written in Latin (Newton, Pascal, Erasmus, Spinoza, etc) . To be literate usually meant knowing Latin.French became the language of diplomacy in the 18 th century so if you want to read treaties of that period, French is necessary.
