I hate these polls. :notrust:
How does one compare a tank built in 1939 with one built in 1945.

There should be 4 separate polls .
Plus you can't make a comparison between a KV-1
and an IS-2 , the first built before WW2 even begun
and the second towards the end .
No offence mate but this poll doesn't make sense .

Light: Chaffee
Medium: Pz. IV (closely followed by the PZ. V and the T-34/85)
Tank Destroyer: Stug III (it destroyed more enemy vehicles than any other German tank/tank destroyer and my favourite vehicle overall). I also have a soft spot for the Soviet SU-76 a quite successful td but often overlooked due to the presence of "monsters" like the huge ISU-122 and SU-152 assault guns in the same army.

I don't really know about heavies as I am less familiar with them (I don't really like the concept of slow behemoths produced in small numbers)
What happened to the Italian armored vehicles? Italy certainly produced slow, underpowered, lightly armored and armed tanks but its tank destroyers were quite successful (the Semovente 75/18 is in my opinion one of the best tds of the conflict)

If the end date of your poll is VJ Day
The best tank of the war was the British Centurion

Heavy tanks were a Cul-De_Sac
What is the criteria for best ?

Light tanks cover a lot of ground - again what is the criteria ?

Overall, I'd say T-34-85 for a medium tank and Tiger for a heavy. As far as T-34 is concerned, at the start of the war T-34-76 was probably the best medium tank out there, but later in the war it got outclassed by the newer German tanks. Still, the overall impact of both T-34 and the Tiger on battlefields was the biggest of the rest of the list.

Sherman for light tank. Hetzer for assault gun platform. Kv-1 for heavy tank and Panther for medium. Panther is a better tank than Tiger or anything before it, it has armor, speed and firepower. The Allies had more trouble with Panther than with Tiger.

But...but...it replaced M3, a light tank...and they had the same combat doctrine....
The tank you're referring to is also known as the M5 Stuart. The tank the Sherman replaced was the M3 Lee, which is also a medium tank.

[ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3_Stuart]M3 Stuart - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] vs. [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3_Lee]M3 Lee - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

As for doctrines... the M4 was built and intended to be able to support infantry and not necessarily for direct combat with enemy tanks, which was up the tank destroyers in WWII. It was not intended or used as a scout as the Stuart tank was.
