Flint's plan could have succeeded. The point was to take the ship from behind, and destroy it's rudder capabilities and then from the bow. Had Mr. Dufresne not tried his hand against Flint at that time, and let the ship get out of range, they could have potentially hit its rudder with the full force of the Walrus' cannons. Instead, when their hand was forced by Silver, the Spanish Man-o-War was mostly out of range, and only a couple of them hit the it, with the rest hopelessly falling into the water.

If the Walrus had fired their cannons when ready, there was a distinct possibility that the Man-o-War's rudder would have been destroyed, disabling its ability to maneuver. When that happened, the Ranger would have opened up on the it's bow. After pounding it, the plan was to then engage the ship in hand to hand from both sides.

They knew the idea was mostly suicide. Flint even says as much. But this was the only plausible avenue to attack. It fell short because of Mr. Dufresne's defying the Captain's orders in battle.
And just how would they deal with the upwards of a 1000 men of the crew? not to mention the marines

They'd potentially find a way. Don't forget that if the Man-o-War's rudder is disabled, they can't maneuver. At that point, the Ranger and the Walrus can fire with impunity and use their deck guns. It wouldn't have been impossible for them.

Though because we never got to see what happened if the Walrus struck when Flint precisely wanted them too, we can't really speculate what would happen.

Yes, this season only had eight episodes.

They would struggle to say the least even with a disabled 1st rate ship --- even if their small calibre guns did any significant damage.

The plan was 'reasonable' if it was against a frigate---- which would still have been much bigger and more powerful than a pirate vessel --- and there were cases of such actions or similar.

Basically the throw away remark 'she's got over 100 guns' is for effect on the audience (its a TV show not a documentary after all) and in reality that makes it a 1st rate ship which would have simply been too big.

It wasn't a 1st rate. They were describing it as a 2nd rate. Still a huge long shot, but stranger things have happened in real life never mind fictional stories.

Well they claim in the series a '100 guns' that's a first rate but the ship they fight has only 2 decks that's a 74+ which is a second rate.

Whatever no privateer or pirate could in their remotest dreams taken on a '74' without being slaughtered.

I know of one action where frigates took on a battle ship (a 74) and won --Edward Pellow against a French 74 even then he forced her aground by superior seamanship.

A much better scenario is two privateers/pirates defeating a frigate -- possible , unlikely but did happen.
