What you say in not wrong. but that is what SECC is reported to have indicated. Perhaps that is why another exercise will be undertaken in 2021. Perhaps the government would do well to consult these priests first. They are the specialists. :)

Yeah! The way the modern education system works a lot of Indians don't know their own history

It is highly likely that the huge number of castes you mentioned are a byproduct of many people enlisting their family name as caste

In continuation of my post above, yesterday on one Indian TV channel, the number of castes in India was given as 7500. Even this figure is too high. It could be because of dissimilar names in various states for the same caste.

In Northern Indian subcontinent except Afghanistan,a lot of mass conversions happened as a result of Sufi saints. Kashmiri Pandits were converted mostly by Sufis and are mostly of Sufi order(well forget the todays issue but this is what it is) as were Punjabi Khatris in my opinion. Forced conversions were sporadic and scattered and the population of India was so large so I guess that such large mass conversions of a caste is impossible.

Yes, 7500 is much more believable as all the states may have some unique groups

I read online that the figure is 3000. Does that make it any more or less difficult to work out a long term plan to eliminate caste in India.? (i'm assuming some kind of long term strategy already exists)tf

There is no long term strategy to eliminate castes in India. In stead the strategy seems to be the elimination of all forms of caste based discrimination. Caste system is vehemently justified in all Hindu holy texts, and remains an integral part of Hinduism. As a result, elimination of the castes in India could be achieved only by eliminating Hinduism itself.

Hindus of upper castes take much pride in their castes. They trumpet it or broadcast it hoping that others would treat them in high esteem because they were born so. One can actually see this behavior in this forum. Caste system is so ingrained in the Hindu psyche that it is almost impossible to get rid off.

Well, Prime Minister has the strategy and has taken the first step - 10% reservation for poor among other than 'Other Backward Classes' and 'Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes'. It is not limited to Hindus and is open to people from other religions also, i.e., Muslims and Christians too. That is 'affirmative action' for poor in the society irrespective of their caste or religion. If this is expanded, then there would be no need for caste-based exclusively-Hindu reservation and people like you who want "elimination of Hinduism" would not be able to find loop-holes in Hinduism. But for that he needs a win in May 2019.

Kandal, you forget that you are in a history forum and want to make it a religious-hate forum like "Dabiq" of Islamic State. Your post has been reported. This is absolute foolishness. Hinduism is not going to be eliminated by your imbecile rants.
